Schooner Melvina ~ 29 October 1859

On this day in 1859, the schooner Melvina sprung a leak during a storm and went ashore on the inside of the Ocracoke Inlet bar. She was under the command of Captain Cahoon, carrying a cargo of naval stores (pine tar, pitch and turpentine) bound for Boston. The vessel was reported to be a total loss.
