On this day in 1864 the steamer Wild Dayrell was lost at Stump Inlet. Stump Inlet no longer exists. It was located on the stretch of Topsail Island between New River Inlet and Topsail Inlet. This 1822 chart by by R Brazier and E L Young shows the location of the inlet.
