On this day in 1778 Governor Richard Caswell issued a proclomation offering a reward of 50 pounds to any white free man who would come forth with the names and addresses of anyone that unlawfully acquired property and cargo of the vessel Diamond that had recently wrecked at the Ocracoke bar. This was not a common practice of the governor but he was petitioned to do so by Captain John Shepherd of the vessel. Image of Gov. Richard Caswell.
