At 1:00 a.m. on the morning of March 21, the three-masted schooner Lottie Lee was forced ashore six miles south of the Durants station during a 73 mph southeaster and became a total wreck. She had been built two years earlier in Goshen, NY.

The crew of the Lottie Lee, which was wrecked at Hatteras ... was saved by a party of Hatteras pilots, by means of a boatswain chair passed along a cable from the wreck to the shore.
