On this day in 1920 the steamer Maside stranded on the bar 2 miles south of Beaufort Inlet. The seas were high and the wind was blowing a gale, causing waves to crash over the entire deck of the ship. A motor lifeboat with crew from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Fort Macon was able to reach the vessel and pull all 5 sailors from the doomed steamship. The survivors were cared for at the station for several days and were supplied with clothing and first aid items from the Blue Anchor Society, Aid for the Shipwrecked, Women's National Association.
