ca. 1830 map shows the Dismal Swamp Canal
at what is now South Mills in Camden County.
On this day in 1851 the schooner John Boushell was lost in the Albemarle Sound. Four people perished in the accident. The vessels namesake, John Boushell, was from Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He built 'canal schooners' that were designed to travel the Dismal Swamp Canal, a connection to the markets of Tidewater Virginia. These boats were synonymous to the Albemarle region.
