Steamer Maside ~ December 14, 1920

NORTH CAROLINA MARITIME MUSEUM
Beaufort, NC
www.ncmaritimemuseum.org

On this day in 1920 the steamer Maside stranded on the bar 2 miles south of Beaufort Inlet. The seas were high and the wind was blowing a gale, causing waves to crash over the entire deck of the ship. A motor lifeboat with crew from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Fort Macon was able to reach the vessel and pull all 5 sailors from the doomed steamship. The survivors were cared for at the station for several days and were supplied with clothing and first aid items from the Blue Anchor Society, Aid for the Shipwrecked, Women's National Association.

Sloop Unqua ~ 15 August 1882

Annual Report of the Operations of the United States Life-Saving Service for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1882:

The sloop Unqua, of Augustine, Florida, broke anchor in Bogue Sound and came ashore at Ft. Macon where the vessel was torn apart by waves. She had already been saved earlier this year off Bodie Island in an attempt to enter Oregon Inlet, and again in early November after parting her mooring in Roanoke Sound.
