The 133-ton schooner
Eunity B. Wharton went ashore in Hatteras Inlet. Then, during a gale on January 4, 1878, she sank turning bottom up. The
Wharton, under the command of Captain Harry Allen, was enroute to New York from Pantego with a load of shingles and timber. The cargo and vessel were totally lost. The wrecking schooner
Metor ran aground while trying to get her off.
