Schooner Emilea ~ February 6, 1752

On this day in 1752 two vessels were reported lost at Teache's Island by the Virginia Gazette. The schooner Emilea of Hampton Virginia, everyone saved, but a sloop out of New Bern lost all on board. The paper was probably referring to Ocracoke Island which had been marked as Occacock on several maps from earlier that cenury. Teache's Hole, a channel near the island, had been marked as well on some later maps as seen in this chart from 1809 by Edmund Blount.
